It is a chloromethyl ketone, which inhibits the L-type calcium channels in cells. Z-Leu-Tyr-chloromethylketone has been shown to block the influx of calcium ions into cytosolic compartments. This process leads to inhibition of protein synthesis and cell death by apoptosis.
