It is an asymmetric synthesis catalyst that is used to form glycol ethers, which are widely used as solvents and additives. Lithium methoxide is formed in the reaction of lithium metal with methanol, glycerin, or ethylene oxide. The reaction mechanism for this process involves lithium metal reacting with water to form lithium hydroxide, followed by a nucleophilic attack on the carbonyl group of the molecule. This process produces a particle that can be seen under a microscope, so it is also known as "lithium soap." Lithium methoxide has been shown to be stable in organic media such as glycol ethers and fatty acids. It has also been shown to have electrochemical impedance spectroscopy properties that are similar to those of fatty acids.
