Lithium fluoride is used to produce fluorine gas by reaction with hydrochloric acid, which is then reacted with hydrogen fluoride to produce hydrogen trifluoride. Lithium fluoride is also used for biological purposes, such as the treatment of hyperthyroidism. In addition, lithium fluoride can be used to treat syphilis and other sexually transmitted diseases because it has an inhibitory effect on bacterial growth. Lithium fluoride also inhibits erythrocyte proliferation by inhibiting DNA synthesis and protein synthesis in vivo.
