Lithium thiocyanate hydrate is used in pharmaceutical preparations as a coagulant and solvent. Crystals of this compound are formed by reacting lithium chloride with hexafluoroisopropanol in an aqueous solution containing metal ions. The crystals are macrocyclic structures consisting of alternating layers of lithium thiocyanate and sulfoxide groups. These groups form hydrogen bonds between adjacent layers, leading to the formation of the crystals' crystalline structure.
