Butyl L-lactate (BL) is an organic solvent that is used to extract cellulose acetate from wood. It is a colorless liquid with a strong, pungent odor and a boiling point of 180 °C. The liquid has high concentrations of chloride ions and is toxic to many organisms, including nematodes and mammals. Butyl L-lactate can be used as a replacement for hydrochloric acid in the production of butyl esters, which are used in the manufacture of plastics and synthetic rubber. The vapor pressure of BL at room temperature is 2 mmHg per second.
