Lead acetate is a compound that has not been found to be carcinogenic. In vitro studies have shown that lead acetate inhibits the activity of the enzyme succinic dehydrogenase, an important component of the Krebs cycle and oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria. Lead acetate also inhibits cell proliferation by inducing apoptosis and inhibiting mitochondrial membrane potential. Lead acetate is used as a standard reference material for biological samples, such as blood or urine. It can be used to study locomotor activity and enzyme activities in animals and to assess oxidative injury in humans. Lead acetate can be toxic at high doses, but it is not carcinogenic.
