Lactobionic acid is a white, crystalline powder with a molecular weight of 278.3 g/mol. It is an organic compound that is used as a reactant in organic synthesis, as a reagent for the determination of iron and calcium in biological samples, and as an intermediate in the production of polyesters. Lactobionic acid can be used to synthesize polyester materials with high molecular weights and high purity. The compound has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis.
