Lactamide is an organic compound that can be synthesized from ammonia and acetamide. The ammonolysis of acetamide produces a mixture of the two enantiomers, (R)-(+)-lactamide and (S)-(-)-lactamide. The hydrolysis of lactamides with base produces the corresponding amides, which are used in biochemical studies. Lactams have a long half-life value in water due to their high stability. They also have a dipole moment, which is important for determining their biological properties. Lactams are reactive molecules that undergo transfer reactions with other substances. In some cases, they are immobilized on surfaces or gels for use in chromatography or other separation techniques. Lactamase enzymes catalyze the hydrolysis of lactam rings to form amino acids and ammonia.
