Loganic acid is a natural phenolic compound that has been isolated from a variety of plants, including the Chinese herb "Logan" (Coptis chinensis). Loganic acid is believed to be an inhibitor of the human DNA polymerase. In vitro studies have shown that loganic acid inhibits 3T3-L1 preadipocyte differentiation and can cause eye disorders such as cataract and age-related macular degeneration. Loganic acid also has genotoxic activity and radiation sensitizing properties. It binds to the ocular melanin pigment in the eye lens to prevent radiation damage. Loganic acid also has high affinity for certain receptors, such as retinoic acid receptors, with potential implications for treatment of cancer. Loganic acid was first isolated by preparative high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in 1974 and structurally characterized in 1976.
