- Benzothiazole, 5-Methoxy-2-Methyl-
5-Methoxy-2-methylbenzothiazole is a spiropyran that has been used as a probe for chromium. It is synthesized from 2-chloro-5-methoxybenzaldehyde, which condenses with 2,4,6-trimethylaniline to form the quaternary ammonium salt. The synthesis of 5-methoxy-2-methylbenzothiazole can be achieved by reacting aluminum chloride with the dichloride salt of 5-methoxybenzoic acid and aniline. This compound is stable in air and water and has a colorimetric property at pH 8.5.
