4-Methylbenzylcyanide is a chemical substance that is used as an antibacterial agent. It has been found to inhibit the growth of filamentous fungi, such as Aspergillus niger and Penicillium notatum, at concentrations of 1 mM. 4-Methylbenzylcyanide has also been shown to have anticancer activity in cell cultures, showing the ability to inhibit cancer cell growth by binding to DNA and preventing RNA synthesis. The cyanides in this compound react with chloride ions to form hydrochloric acid, which can cause stomach irritation at high doses.
