It is a homogeneous catalyst, which means it does not require the presence of any other substances or catalysts. The reaction mechanism of 5-methyl-2-acetylfuran is that the carbonyl group reacts with oxygen to produce an alcohol and aldehyde group. 5-Methyl-2-acetylfuran has been shown to be effective in the synthesis of fatty acids by hydrogenation in flow systems. This process can also be performed using copper complexes.
