4-Methyl-3-nitropyridine is a nitro compound that has been shown to inhibit the HIV protease nevirapine. The nitro group interacts with the enzyme's active site, which prevents the formation of an enzyme-substrate complex and thus prevents HIV from replicating. 4-Methyl-3-nitropyridine also shows interaction with other molecules, such as hydrogen peroxide, by introducing a hydroxy group to form pyridinium ions. This alters their vibrational frequency and can lead to the formation of aldehydes.
