Fluphenazine is a phenothiazine antipsychotic drug that is used in the treatment of schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders. Fluphenazine inhibits the enzyme monoamine oxidase, which is responsible for the breakdown of dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine. The activity of this drug has been confirmed by screening in C. elegans and Drosophila melanogaster, as well as in mammalian cell lines. Fluphenazine hydrochloride can be used to treat symptoms associated with Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Tourette syndrome, Huntington's chorea, and chronic pain syndromes. It also has been shown to inhibit the growth of human cancer cells in culture.
