4-Methoxycinnamic acid is a naturally occurring phenolic compound that is found in plants and most animal tissues. It has been shown to be an effective agent for the demethylation of 1-methyl-4-(trifluoromethoxy)benzene by oxidative activity. The mechanism of this process is believed to involve the formation of hydrogen peroxide, which can then react with the substrate at an alkene site. This results in a proton being transferred from the substrate to oxygen, which generates an uncoupling effect.
