2-Methyl-2-(4-nitrophenoxy)propanoic acid is a white crystalline substance that belongs to the group of organic compounds. It has a strong odor and is soluble in water. 2-Methyl-2-(4-nitrophenoxy)propanoic acid is an ester of propanoic acid and benzene. The molecule has two asymmetric carbon atoms, so it exists in three possible stereoisomers: 1S,2R,3S,4S; 1R,2S,3R,4R; and 1S,2S,3S,4R. 2-Methyl-2-(4-nitrophenoxy)propanoic acid is used in the synthesis of other substances. It can be hydrolyzed to form propanoic acid and benzene by ester hydrolysis or by alkali hydrolysis with sodium hydroxide.
