Methyl 5-(hydroxymethyl)-2-furoate is a natural compound that belongs to the class of furoates and is biosynthesized by the reaction of methylfuran with hydrogen peroxide. It has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth in vitro by inhibiting protein synthesis. The mechanism of action is not known, but it may involve hydrogen bonding or competition for the same enzyme as antibiotics. Methyl 5-(hydroxymethyl)-2-furoate also inhibits inflammatory diseases, such as arthritis and colitis, in an animal model by suppressing neutrophil recruitment and cytokine production.
