It is used in the synthesis of drugs, such as 3-methylphthalic acid and 3-methylphthalic anhydride. 3-Methyl phthalic anhydride has been shown to have anticancer activity and can inhibit cancer cell growth by interfering with the synthesis of DNA and RNA. The anticancer activity can be attributed to its ability to inhibit DNA synthesis and cause DNA damage that results from reactive oxygen species generated by chemometric analysis.
