6-Methyl-1,3-benzoxazol-2(3H)-one (6MB) is a synthetic antimicrobial that inhibits the growth of bacteria. 6MB has shown inhibitory activities against a wide range of human and microbial pathogens, including Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. 6MB may be used as an alternative to antibiotics with the ability to treat bacterial infections resistant to other treatments. This drug has been shown to inhibit the production of virulence factors in P. aeruginosa and other bacterial strains, which may be due to its ability to regulate the expression of genes involved in regulating cell membrane transport. 6MB also inhibits protein synthesis by binding to ribosomes and preventing RNA polymerase from transcribing DNA into messenger RNA (mRNA).
