1-Methyl-1H-pyrazole-3-carbonitrile is a quaternary ammonium salt that has anticancer activity. It inhibits the growth of cancer cells by interfering with the synthesis of DNA and RNA, which are essential for cell division. 1-Methyl-1H-pyrazole-3-carbonitrile is synthesized from monocationic pyrazoles in a nucleophilic attack. The synthesis can be carried out at room temperature or at elevated temperatures. The compound exhibits an antitumor effect at low doses because it induces apoptosis in cancer cells by stimulating an intracellular signaling pathway mediated by protein kinase C and protein tyrosine kinases. This compound also has a strong cytotoxicity against other forms of cancer such as leukemia, melanoma, and sarcoma cancers.
