Methyl 2-methyl-3,5-dinitrobenzoate is an electrophilic compound with the formula CHNO2. It is a postulated intermediate in the synthesis of methyl 3,5-dinitrobenzoate from benzene and nitric acid. The conversion of methyl 2-methyl-3,5-dinitrobenzoate to methyl 3,5-dinitrobenzoate can be accomplished by heating it in an acid solution or by treating it with nitronium tetrafluoroborate. Nitration of methyl 2-methyl-3,5-dinitrobenzoate yields nitro groups that are eliminated upon treatment with dienes such as ethyl diazoacetate. Methyl 2-methyl-3,5-dinitrobenzoate undergoes a dihedral reaction to produce oriented products. The benzene ring present in this molecule has two positions that can be occupied by electron donating groups
