5-(4-Methylpiperazin-1-yl)-2-nitrophenyl]amine is a potential agent for the treatment of benzene poisoning. It has been shown to be an irreversible inhibitor of the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase, which plays a role in the synthesis of DNA and proteins. 5-(4-Methylpiperazin-1-yl)-2-nitrophenyl]amine reversibly inhibits methylamine dehydrogenase (EC 1.4.1.3) with a Ki value of 0.8 mM and also inhibits pyridoxal phosphate dependent aminotransferases, including alanine aminotransferase (EC 2.6.1.2), aspartate aminotransferase (EC 2.6.1.1), and glycine aminotransferase (EC 2.6.1.19).
