Methyl 5-methyl-2-furoate is a sequenced feedstock that can be synthesized from the reaction of formaldehyde and furfural, which are obtained from the processing of biomass. The process has been optimized to produce methyl 5-methyl-2-furoate using a chloride or hydrogen chloride activation process. Furan and methyl 5-methyl-2-furoate have similar properties in terms of lubricity, but methyl 5-methyl-2-furoate is more efficient because it does not require an additional step for removal of water. Methyl 5-methyl 2 furoate can be used as a substitute for other oils that are used in lubricants, such as rapeseed oil and palm oil, because it reduces smoke emissions during combustion.
