Methyl 6-(bromomethyl)nicotinate is a hydroxylate that has been postulated as a synthetic intermediate in the oxidation of catechol and phenol. The reaction mechanism for methyl 6-(bromomethyl)nicotinate is proposed to be via peroxide-mediated bond cleavage, followed by a tetradentate ligand-assisted oxidative addition. This process generates two stereospecific oxidation products, one with the hydroxyl group on the methyl carbon atom and the other with it on the bromine carbon atom. Methyl 6-(bromomethyl)nicotinate can also be synthesized through an oxidative telomerization process, which involves introducing a proton at each of four consecutive positions on the benzene ring.
