Methyl 2-methyl-2-phenylpropanoate (MMPP) is an oxadiazole that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of periodontal disease. MMPP has been shown to inhibit serine proteases, which are enzymes that break down proteins in the mouth and lead to inflammation of the gums and teeth. The alkoxycarbonyl groups on MMPP may react with reactive oxygen species produced by bacteria, preventing their growth. Studies have also shown that peptoids containing MMPP may be used as a therapeutic agent for glomerulonephritis and neutrophil mediated inflammation.
