2-(1-Methylethyl)-oxirane is a molecule that can be used as a polymerization inhibitor in the production of polyvinyl chloride. It is also a nature-based additive for endophytic fungus. 2-(1-Methylethyl)oxirane reacts with ethylene diamine and phosphorus pentoxide at high temperatures to form polyvinyl. This reaction system generates oxysterols, which are organic molecules that may have an effect on the environment. The reaction products are sulfonic acids and hydroxyl groups, which are residues that may be toxic to organisms.
