(2-Methyl-3-nitrophenyl)methanol is a nitro compound that belongs to the class of nitrosamines. It has been shown to have a strong interaction with DNA, which may cause macrocyclization and the formation of topoisomerase inhibitors. This compound also has dihedral interactions with amide groups in proteins and amino acid residues in DNA, which may affect protein synthesis and cell division. (2-Methyl-3-nitrophenyl)methanol has been shown to be an environmental pollutant that can react with ethylene to form dinitrophenol (DNP), a substance that is known to be carcinogenic. The reaction between DNP and benzoate results in the formation of benzenedinitrile, which can be mutagenic.
