5-Methyl-1H-pyrrole-2-carbaldehyde is an organic compound that is a peroxide. It reacts with nucleophiles such as copper salts and perchlorates to produce trifluoroacetate esters. The reaction with a chloride or bromide salt produces the corresponding chloroformate or bromoformate ester. This reaction was initially described in tobacco leaf and then applied to the synthesis of a number of different compounds, including the antibiotic corrin. This compound can be synthesized by reacting pyrrole with formaldehyde and acetic acid in the presence of ammonium acetate, followed by hydrolysis of the resulting intermediate methyl carbamate.
