Methyl 2-bromobutanoate undergoes polymerization when it is heated or exposed to ultraviolet light, and can be used as a polymerization initiator. In addition, it has been shown to have high cytotoxicity against tumor xenografts and bacterial enzymes. Methyl 2-bromobutanoate reacts with l-tartaric acid to form methyl 3,4-dihydroxybutanoate, which is an intermediate of the citric acid cycle. It also reacts with carbonyl groups to form β-unsaturated ketones such as butyric acid.
