Ketotifen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is used to treat allergic reactions. It has been shown to inhibit the production of eosinophil cationic protein, cell factor, and fumarate in vitro. Ketotifen also inhibits the release of histamine from mast cells by blocking the H1 receptor on the cell surface. Ketotifen is structurally related to piperidine and has been shown to have an affinity for benzalkonium chloride, which may be due to its ability to bind covalently with this molecule. It has been shown to be ophthalmic and biocompatible.
