3-Methyl-2-butanone (3MB) is a trifluoroacetic acid derivative that is used as a solvent. It has been used in traditional Chinese herb medicine to treat high fever, headache, and pain. 3MB reacts with metal hydroxides and undergoes an acid-catalyzed reaction with the hydroxyl group of alcohols to form esters. The reaction mechanism for this process involves steric interactions between methyl groups, which are adjacent on the molecule and hinder rotation about the C-C bond.
