2-Methyl-5-nitro-pyrimidine-4,6-diol is a bioactive molecule that has been shown to have antibacterial activity against Chromobacterium violaceum. This compound has also been shown to inhibit the growth of other bacteria such as Salmonella enterica, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It has a hydrophobic nature, which may be due to its ability to bind to the hydrophobic region of bacterial cell walls and membranes. The 2 methyl group on the pyrimidine ring may be important for binding because it strengthens the charges in this region.
