Methyl 9H-pyrido[3,4-b]indole-1-carboxylate is a short-chain indole alkaloid that has been isolated from the plants Picrasma quassioides and Portulaca oleracea. It is one of the most potent inhibitors of cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, which is involved in inflammatory diseases. Methyl 9H-pyrido[3,4-b]indole-1-carboxylate is synthesized by the condensation of aminoacetonitrile with 3-(2'-hydroxyethoxy)-5-(2'-nitrophenoxy)benzaldehyde in acetonitrile at room temperature. The pharmacophore was elucidated through analysis of its chromatographic properties and spectroscopic data.
