Methyl piperazine-1-carboxylate hydrochloride is a potent systolic modulator that is used to prevent and treat congestive heart failure. It is also used to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, but has not been shown to be effective for the treatment of asthma. Methyl piperazine-1-carboxylate hydrochloride blocks the binding of calcium ions to myosin, the protein responsible for muscle contraction. This leads to increased levels of calcium in the cytosol, which causes sarcomere shortening and an increase in cardiac contractility. The drug has been found to be selective for cardiac tissue, with little effect on other organs such as the kidneys or liver.
Methyl piperazine-1-carboxylate hydrochloride also inhibits phosphodiesterase and increases cAMP levels, which enhances cardiac contractility and relaxes vascular smooth muscle.
