3-Methylpentane is a colorless, volatile liquid that is a component of gasoline. It has an activation energy of 11.6 kJ/mol, and the reaction mechanism for hydrolysis is shown below:
The hydroxy group (OH) on 3-methylpentane reacts with trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TFMSOH) to form 3-methylpentyl trifluoromethanesulfonate (3MTMF). The solubility data for 3-methylpentane are listed in the table below:
