Manganese (IV) oxide has also been shown to have a protective effect on cells against radiation by inhibiting lipid peroxidation and protecting cell membranes from damage. Manganese (IV) oxide nanoparticles are used as a model system for studying brain function, due to their ability to penetrate the blood-brain barrier. Manganese oxides are also used in wastewater treatment, because they react with nitrogen compounds and produce ammonia gas which can be removed by a scrubber.
