Dimethyl fumarate is a monomer that is used in the production of acrylics, polymers, and sulfonates. It has been shown to be an effective agent for wastewater treatment. Dimethyl fumarate reacts with sodium carbonate to produce sodium dimethyldithiocarbonate and water. The reaction solution can be treated with sulfonate ion and glycol ether to produce sodium bis(2-methyl-2-propene-1-sulfonyl)thiosulfonate. Dimethyl fumarate also reacts with zirconium oxide to form 2-methyl-2-propene-1-sulfonic acid sodium salt. This product can be used as an antioxidant in vivo model for glycol ethers.
