Methyl pyruvate is a chemical pesticide that inhibits the growth of cancer cells. It is an analogue of pyruvate, which is a small molecule in cellular metabolism. Methyl pyruvate has been shown to inhibit complex enzymes that are involved in energy metabolism, such as mitochondrial membrane potential and cinchonidine-sensitive cycloaddition process. The methyl group on the compound increases its lipophilicity and helps it cross the blood-brain barrier, which may account for its anti-cancer properties.
