It acts as a competitive inhibitor of ATP, leading to inhibition of the enzyme's activity. MSET also inhibits the phosphorylation of cholesteryl ester transfer protein, which is involved in lipid metabolism and transport. This compound has a high degree of membrane permeability and may be used in functional assays to detect protein kinase activity. The reaction product between MSET and an electron-deficient double bond (e.g., enolate) can form either a dipole or an epoxide, depending on the reactivity of the double bond.
