It is used in organic chemistry as a building block for the synthesis of acylations, citric acid and malonic acid. 2-Methylpropane-1,2,3-tricarboxylic acid is also used to synthesize other compounds such as chloroacetic acids. This compound has been shown to react with tetramethylammonium chloride to form tetramethylammonium 2-methylpropane-1,2,3-tricarboxylate ion pairs. The ionic nature of this compound can be seen by its high yield constants and low hydrocarbon content.
