Metaldehyde is a chemical compound that contains two methyl groups and one formaldehyde molecule. Metaldehyde is activated by reaction with an acid, such as hydrochloric acid. Metaldehyde has been shown to inhibit 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) concentrations in the rat brain. The long-term toxicity of metaldehyde is unknown, but kinetic data suggests that it does not accumulate in humans or animals. Metaldehyde is used for wastewater treatment due to its ability to react with nitrogen atoms, which are common contaminants in wastewater streams. Significant interactions have been observed between metaldehyde and body mass index, analytical method, and energy metabolism.
