Monoethanolamine (MEA) is a chemical compound that can be used as a surfactant, emulsifying agent, and pH regulator. It also has an absorption rate of 2-5% in the gastrointestinal tract. Monoethanolamine is often used in combination with other compounds such as piperazine to produce a number of different drugs such as 2-(2-methylamino-ethoxy)-ethanol. This drug has an average absorption rate of about 50%, with peak levels occurring at about 8 hours after ingestion. It is thermally stable up to high temperatures and does not degrade when heated.
