4-Methyl-4-nitrovaleraldehyde is an intermediate in the synthesis of other organic compounds. It is a synthetic, paramagnetic compound that has been used as a resonance label in NMR and EPR experiments to study the structure of biomolecules. 4-Methyl-4-nitrovaleraldehyde is synthesized by reacting nitric acid with acetaldehyde. The reaction produces a mixture of products, including 4-methyl-4-nitrovaleraldehyde. This product can be purified by vacuum distillation and recrystallization from hot water.
