4-Methyl-4-phenylcyclohexanone is a chiral compound that can be synthesized by recycling of 4-methylcyclohexanone. It can be obtained from the reaction of cyclohexanones with lipase, which is a type of enzyme that breaks down fats and oils. Lipase catalyzes the hydrolysis of esters to form an alcohol and an acid. This reaction produces a chiral product with a single stereocenter. 4-Methyl-4-phenylcyclohexanone is also obtained from transesterification reactions with esters, such as methyl acetate and phenylacetate. The selectivity of this process depends on the substituent group on the lipase enzyme's surface, which is either hydrophobic or hydrophilic.
