5-Methylheptanoic acid (5MHA) is a dietary supplement that is structurally similar to oxazolidinones. It has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis. 5MHA may be an effective treatment for outbreaks of these bacteria, which are resistant to other antibiotics. In the laboratory, it has been shown that 5MHA inhibits fatty acid production in plant cells by inhibiting the enzyme delta-9 desaturase. The stereoselectivity of 5MHA has also been studied in mice, with statistically significant results seen in the fatty acid levels and clinical development of animals that were given the supplement.
