Descripción

Melarsomine is a benzimidazole compound that inhibits the growth of parasitic roundworms and other helminths. It is used to treat chronic pulmonary ascaridiasis, ascariasis, and strongyloidiasis in humans. Melarsomine is also used to diagnose these infections. The drug binds to the surface glycoprotein of parasites, which prevents the entry of oxygen into cells. This leads to an accumulation of lactic acid in the tissues and causes cell death by apoptosis. Melarsomine has been shown to have anti-allergic effects in experimental models by inhibiting the production of inflammatory mediators such as histamine and leukotrienes.
