4-Maleimidobutyric acid N-succinimidyl ester is a maleimide compound that can be used as an antimicrobial. It has been shown to have the ability to bind to toll-like receptors, which are proteins found on cells that play a role in immune responses. 4-Maleimidobutyric acid N-succinimidyl ester has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by binding to DNA and crosslinking it. The drug also inhibits protein synthesis and enzyme activities in bacteria.
4-Maleimidobutyric acid N-succinimidyl ester has not been tested for its effects on humans, but it has been shown to be nontoxic in animal studies. This drug may cause cell lysis and thermal expansion, which means that it may be useful in the study of axonal growth and toxicity studies.
