Meradine is a synthetic compound that inhibits the synthesis of proteins in cells. It was developed as a potential antiviral drug, but it also has been used to treat bacterial infections. Meradine inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the ribosome and inhibiting the activity of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2 (eIF2). This inhibition leads to an accumulation of unprocessed mRNA and a decrease in protein synthesis. The Meradine molecule has a hydroxyl group that is able to form hydrogen bonds with pyridinium ions, which may be responsible for its inhibitory effect on viral replication.
