The mechanism of this transport process has not been fully elucidated, but it is thought that the 3-mercapto group may form a covalent bond with the chrysomelidae which then allows for transport. This mechanism has not been confirmed, but it is thought that in some cases, methyl 3-mercaptobenzoate may also be able to transport iridoid glucosides. Methyl 3-mercaptobenzoate is most effective when used in conjunction with other agents like chrysomelidae and salicylaldehyde.
