2-Methyl-5-nitrobenzoyl chloride is a synthetic molecule that has been shown to have potent antiproliferative activity. The synthesis of this compound involves the reaction between 2-methylbenzoic acid and nitric acid in the presence of sodium cyanamide as a catalyst. This process takes about 10 hours, which is relatively slow for an organic synthesis. 2-Methyl-5-nitrobenzoyl chloride has an isomerism that could be exploited for drug development, specifically in the treatment of cancer. It has also been shown to inhibit tumor growth by interfering with the cell cycle at G2/M phase and blocking protein synthesis.
